Universal love for classic storytelling

 the fir tree

The magical fairy tales of world-renowned Danish author Hans Christian Andersen (1805-1875)

have been translated into more than 125 languages –

but not this one that we are about to present to you.

The story of the little fir tree so anxious to grow up

that he cannot appreciate living in the moment

may not be the most popular of the authors’ celebrated tales,

but it is indeed an insightful one.

This somehow tragic tale about naive dissatisfaction with life

and illusory expectations is so much up-to date.

To grow quick and get bigger

is not always a good goal to have

(as it turned out to be for the little fir tree).

This story is retold through the beautiful and intricate illustrations

of Finnish illustrator Sanna Annukka.

Cloth-bound in rich forest green,

with gold foil embellishments, the new book The Fir Tree

is a unique work of art.

In a same way our Fairytale forest blankets

is also a unique artwork

of the two talented Danish designers, Kristine Meyer and Sabine Lavigne

who have painstakingly cut out the pattern by hand

in much the same way

as legendary children’s storyteller Hans Christian Anderson

fashioned his illustrations using just paper and scissors.

The cute yet intrinsically detailed patterns

have proved captivating to a global customer base

and reflect the universal love for classic storytelling and themes.

Sanna Annukka has revitalized The Fir Tree  story

for a modern design-conscious audience

through her colorful and captivating illustrations.

Furry Friends – Legends, Myths, and Stories

Fox-2-color-together-blog-710-575
In every culture different animals have different personalities attached to them.
In many cultures, the fox appears in folklore as a symbol of a sneaky and trickery, or as a familiar animal possessed of magic powers.
The fox, while weaker, in the end outsmarts both the evil and voracious wolf and the strong but not-so-cunning bear. It symbolizes the victory of intelligence over both unkindness and brute strength.
The attitude towards foxes in different folklores / cultures is ambivalent. While in Asia it seems to be not very positive, we were surprised to find that The Moche people of ancient Peru  believed the fox to be a warrior that would use his mind to fight. We kind of like it.
The bear symbolizes strength, courage, and introspection in animal folklore; whether it is presented as essentially bad or good, it always has something to teach us.

Designer’s process: Furry Friends collection

This is how Rugiada reflects on the design process:

There is a fine balance between the hand drawn lines and more round and cute shapes of the foxes. The fox is a very clever animal, and it’s easy to modulate it in different poses and keep the images dynamic and moving. It suited just perfect for an allover pattern.

The bear is more static animal for me. Big, rough and a little clumsy animal that needs more  place on a pattern. I tried to have this clumsy bear elegant as a circus bear! And the Greenland gang (brilliant name!) is a big bear family from Greenland! It was really the idea to have a bear family, with different characters. The handdrawn element are also important here.
